each high school in the district and put them in a band. Over the course of time, we stayed in and out of touch. I had been working on the first songs that would later be on Former Self two years before we even formed (2014) and I could never find the right people to play with. I saw that Eli's band wasn't active anymore, so I hit him up and sent him the demos. From there we started to jam and he already knew Justin from Riverside Community College Drumline so he brought him in. And then it all kind of clicked.
Q: Is there a backstory or meaning to your bands name?
A: Eli's ex-girlfriend had a really hard time expressing how she felt, so she would write notes to him and scatter/hide them throughout his room. After they broke up, Eli didn't really do much for a whole year and then decided to clean his room one day and found all the hidden notes. So it's derived from that sick feeling of remembering a past relationship.
Q: What goes through your head when writing your songs?
A: My process comes from whatever is really troubling me at the time. Former Self was about my experiences in the first two years of college at NAU. So a lot of that came from "remember that crazy time in my life?" Sometimes Old Notes will collaborate on lyrics like two new ones about an abusive relationship or suicide from different perspectives. Also, now that I'm a college graduate, a lot of lyrics stem from "what the heck am I doing here?" and "what is my purpose here?" As far as the process, it could be lyrics first music second, or music first with a riff and then lyrics built around that riff.
Q: What are your thoughts on your upcoming tour with Andy's Room? How are you feeling about it?
A: I am really really excited! It's my first real tour experience. In the past I've only done three day runs. Usually poorly spaced travel wise. Andy's Room is an amazing band and they're great people to be around. They give off those really positive vibes and I'm glad I get to hang out with them every day for two weeks. Further, I'm excited to play shows with my friends Eli and Justin. Like, we love playing live and now we get to do it a bunch. I am nervous however of all the bad things that could happen while we're out there like van troubles and theft. but as long as we are smart and conscious about everything we should be fine! Again, I am stoked!
